I woke up today hating life, having had four hours sleep after cleaning out two rooms and moving everything I own from one to the other. Then, I remembered that I bought this on Thursday and hadn’t listened to it yet. ‘Hummer’ is about to end, and I’ve gone from having no life left in me to feeling like I can conquer the world.
Tym, please hurry up and clone that v4 Big Muff so my guitar can sound like this record forever and ever.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]This is the isolated guitar track from “Cherub Rock,” the first track from Smashing Pumpkins’ second album Siamese Dream, one of the best albums in the history of ever.
For the nerdier amongst you, this sound was created by playing a Fender Stratocaster equipped with Lace Sensor pick-ups into a late 70s v.4 op-amp Big Muff Pi into a 100w Marshall JCM 800 running off KT88 tubes. Oh, and layering that combination many, many times under the sharp eye of Butch Vig.
To me, this is the perfect combination of abrasive fuzz and beautiful, melodic playing. Billy Corgan may be known more for being crazy, prejudiced jerk these days, but before he went absolutely bat shit insane he was one of the greats.
